Ceramic body armor plates can crack when dropped or struck, and heat, moisture, and temperature swings can separate their internal layers. Neither defect marks the outside of the plate, and legacy inspection cannot detect delamination, so a damaged plate can pass inspection and go back into service. The scans here show both types of defects in a Level IV boron carbide plate.
