First Article Inspection (FAI)

Verify the first part before you commit to the production run.

The first article is the test that matters most. It's the moment when design intent meets production reality, and the gap between the two is where programs get into trouble. A first article that passes surface inspection but contains an internal defect, a wall thickness deviation, or a geometry that drifts from CAD nominal will reproduce that problem at volume. Industrial CT catches it before that happens.

CT gives quality engineers a complete internal and external view of a first article in a single scan, without cutting, sectioning, or destroying the part. Every feature, internal geometry, and dimensional characteristic is measurable against CAD nominal. Defects that traditional FAI methods miss because they're internal, enclosed, or geometrically inaccessible are visible before the production run begins.

Voyager streamlines First Article Inspection (FAI) for shoes by providing precise, high-resolution scans to ensure manufacturers meet all design specifications and quality standards.
Industrial CT enables thorough FAI of cast aluminum engine blocks by precisely identifying internal voids with Voyager's Porosity Analysis, ensuring structural integrity and compliance with quality standards.

The stakes of FAI vary by industry, but the cost of a failed first article is the same everywhere: delayed launch, scrapped tooling investment, and a production line that starts on the wrong foundation. Aerospace manufacturers use CT to verify turbine blades, airframe structures, and engine components against stringent design criteria before flight qualification. Automotive teams inspect first-off-tool castings, powertrain components, and structural parts to catch internal porosity, misalignment, and wall thickness variation before PPAP submission. Medical device manufacturers validate surgical instruments, implants, and diagnostic equipment against regulatory requirements before production approval. Athletic equipment and consumer goods teams use the same approach to verify sole constructions, closures, and packaging geometries where internal consistency determines performance.

Lumafield's platform produces a traceable, shareable inspection record from every FAI scan. Results live in Voyager, where they can be compared against CAD, annotated, and carried directly into approval workflows without manual transcription.

Internal feature verification against CAD

Surface inspection confirms what's visible. CT confirms everything. Wall thickness, internal geometry, void distribution, and component position are all measured against design nominal from a single scan, giving quality engineers the complete picture a first article approval actually requires. Deviations that would have traveled into production are documented and resolved before the run begins.

PPAP and regulatory documentation

FAI in automotive and aerospace produces documentation that suppliers and OEMs both depend on. CT generates a dimensional and internal quality record that supports PPAP submission, AS9102 compliance, and FDA design validation requirements with the level of internal feature detail that traditional inspection cannot provide. The record is digital, reproducible, and audit-ready.

New supplier qualification

Qualifying a new supplier means verifying that their process produces parts that match design intent, not just parts that pass surface checks. CT scans first articles from new suppliers against CAD nominal and against parts from incumbent suppliers, giving procurement and quality teams objective evidence before committing to a production relationship.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
