Amazon Electronics Manufacturing Report

Every year, Amazon ships hundreds of millions of consumer electronics devices—Fire tablets, Echo speakers, Kindle readers, Ring cameras, Blink security systems, and more—directly into homes around the world. At that scale, even small rates of quality variation compound into enormous exposure.

We scanned a sample of Blink cameras and the Energizer lithium-ion batteries they use to examine what lies beneath the surface of one of the world’s largest consumer electronics supply chains.

30

Energizer lithium-ion batteries CT scanned and analyzed, plus 3 Blink Camera 4 assemblies.

2x

worse cathode edge alignment in batteries pulled from the Blink Camera 4 units compared to the full sample median.

20.5%

mean QFN porosity across the three camera units, indicating strong process assembly process control.

16%

electronics ecommerce return rate in 2024, with most returns driven by damage or functionality failures.

33

electronics recalls in 2024, roughly 10% of all CPSC consumer product recalls that year.

$1T+

in annual revenue for global consumer electronics.

Consumer electronics recalls hit their second-highest level in six years in 2024, and return rates for electronics now sit at 16%. These high figures are most often driven by damage or functionality failures, as quality issues that originate deep in the supply chain surface after a product is already in a customer's hands.

Lumafield scanned 3 Blink Camera 4 units and 30 of the Energizer lithium-ion batteries those cameras ship with, to see what CT reveals about the quality of the supply chain behind one of the world's largest consumer electronics businesses.

Our automated analysis focused on cathode edge alignment, which is a key indicator of winding precision that directly impacts cell lifespan and performance, along with full assembly deviation analysis and solder joint quality across the camera units.

What we found:

Cell quality insights

Cathode edge alignment, an indicator of winding precision and process control, varied widely across the battery sample. Several cells also had bent cathodes, which can compromise cell lifespan.

Battery variation

The batteries installed in the Blink Camera 4 units had a median edge alignment of 0.920–a huge variance from the full-sample median of 0.454mm.

Consistent assembly

Deviation analysis across the 3 Blink Camera 4 units showed tight agreement, with the deviation range centered around 0.0 mm, indicating strong assembly process controls.
