The Cost of Quality in Automotive

June 1, 2026

Automotive manufacturers have a longer relationship with the Cost of Quality framework than any other industry. The formal discipline was pioneered in large part by automotive, and that maturity shows in the data. A Lumafield survey of 65 automotive quality leaders found that 48% use a comprehensive COQ model, the highest of any industry surveyed, and 57% estimate their total quality costs exceed 5% of revenue.

Download this report and learn:

  • How automotive organizations have built the measurement infrastructure to see their quality costs more clearly than any other industry, and what that visibility reveals
  • Why warranty and field failure costs are a particular burden in automotive, with 79% of respondents spending at least 1% of revenue on warranty and returns
  • How inspection labor costs in automotive exceed the study average, with 69% of organizations paying $30 or more per hour, and what's driving investment in automation
  • Why automotive leads the study in technology adoption, with automated visual inspection, predictive maintenance, and predictive quality analytics all above 58%
  • What supplier-related quality issues, the top concern at 45%, are costing automotive organizations and where the pressure is most acute
