Helical Scanning

Capture the full story.

Helical Scanning expands CT imaging for tall or complex parts.

Many critical parts simply don’t fit within the vertical limits of traditional CT systems. Tall bottles, helmets, footwear, battery cells, and long electronic assemblies often extend beyond the available field of view. This makes high-resolution inspection difficult, since it typically requires moving the part farther from the source.

Lumafield’s new Helical Scanning removes this constraint by moving the part upward as it rotates, capturing a continuous helical dataset that dramatically expands the vertical scan envelope. The result is the ability to scan high-aspect-ratio geometries at 10× or higher resolution. Engineers no longer have to choose between imaging an entire part at low resolution or scanning only a portion at high resolution.

Helical Scanning increases both resolution and scan volume for high-aspect-ratio geometries.

This capability is essential across industries. In CPG, manufacturers can now inspect plastic  bottles from cap to base with uniform, high-resolution detail to capture thread finish, wall thickness, and potential cracks throughout the design. In electronics, Helical Scanning enables complete inspection of elongated components such as the Apple Pencil to reveal solder joint voids or battery defects along the entire length of the part.

Helical scans integrate seamlessly into existing Voyager workflows. Setting upper and lower bounds takes only seconds, and the resulting dataset opens just like any standard scan but with an extended field of view and far more usable data, allowing you to capture high-resolution CT images of large or complex parts without changing anything about the way you work.
