Ultra-Fast CT Scans in as Little as 0.1 Seconds

Lumafield today announced the launch of its Ultra-Fast CT technology, a groundbreaking advancement in manufacturing that reduces inspection time by more than 99%. In as little as 0.1 seconds, Lumafield’s industrial X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) scanners can capture high-resolution internal scans of products ranging from batteries to consumer packaged goods, optical assemblies, medical devices, and more. 

Industrial CT produces the most insightful data in manufacturing, but slow scan speed and high capital equipment costs have prevented widespread adoption at production volumes. Lumafield’s Ultra-Fast CT technology speeds CT inspection by more than 100x, making it practical for high-volume manufacturing.

Ultra-Fast CT is the latest addition to Lumafield’s unified industrial CT platform, which includes Voyager, the company’s cloud-based software for analyzing industrial CT scans, the office-friendly Neptune scanner, and the automated, line-ready Triton inspection solution. This combination of hardware and software gives engineers unprecedented insight into their products at every stage of the development process, from initial R&D through high-volume production.

Quality Issues Holding Back EV Development and Renewable Energy

Ultra-Fast CT is valuable in a wide range of industries, but its first applications will be in battery inspection, where electric vehicle (EV) and clean energy adoption is challenged by the risk of battery failures that can lead to poor performance, catastrophic fires, and costly recalls. As demand for renewable energy surges, the pressure to ensure flawless battery production across all formats and chemistries is greater than ever. However, traditional inspection methods are not fast or precise enough to catch every issue.

Overcoming Barriers to Universal CT Adoption

Industrial CT has long provided the richest and most differentiated source of data about manufactured goods. CT’s dimensionally-accurate 3D reconstructions allow for comprehensive examination of both external and internal features, down to the micron level. However, until recently, two major factors have held back adoption of this transformational technology: cost and speed. 

Legacy industrial CT systems entail upfront and ongoing operational expenses upwards of $1 million, keeping this inspection tool out of reach for all but the largest companies. Even for well-resourced engineering organizations, throughput limitations have prevented the widespread adoption of industrial CT for 100% inspection of all parts.
